Location: Southwest of the villages of Teller
and Brevig Mission. It was built on a sand spit, by the bay of Port Clarence
and Grantley Harbor on the Seward Penninsula.
Climate: Maritime climate, shifting to
an "inland" climate when the Bering Sea freezes each winter. Summer temperatures
average 44 to 57 degrees F. Winter temperatures range from -9 to 8 degrees.
Visitor Facilities: Port Clarence is currently
a U.S. Coast Guard Base. Its primary purpose is to operate LORAN equipment
(a navigational system). All residents work and live in Coast Guard housing.
