Selawik

Bering Air operates regular passenger and cargo flights to the village of Selawik.

Population: over 800

Location: At the mouth of the Selawik River, 70 miles southeast of Kotzebue and 670 miles northwest of Anchorage.

Climate:
Long cold winters and cool summers. Annual precipitation is about 8 inches, including 35 inches of snow.

Visitor Facilities:
No restaurant or banking services available. No laudromat. Groceries and supplies are available at the village stores: Rotman’s Store, Selawik Fuel Project Store (Fuel, food and some clothing), McCoy’s Store, and DJ’s Store. McCoy’s Store has a rental they make availiable to corporate customers, contact (907)484-2125. Village is nearby the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge, which is a breeding spot for migratory fowl.

History: Lt. L.A. Zagoskin from the Imperial Russian Navy reported the village in the 1840’s as “Chilivik”.  Ivan Petroff counted 100 people in his 1880 census.  Around 1908 the site had a small wooden schoolhouse and church.
